Dave himself said the inspiration for this song was the American poet Anne Sexton, who killed herself at age 45.
The way I see it, it’s about a woman whose life is falling apart. She thought she was doing everything right and playing by the rules, but suddenly she realizes her life is miserable – so miserable that even God can’t help her. The line “red blood bleeding from her now” makes me think that she couldn’t take it anymore and killed herself…
