Me and my friend are looking for band members and we don’t know where to start. Do we just ask random people if they play a instrument and like the same type as us or do we go to a website? If you know a musician website that is free and have YOUNG members on it and not just 40 years old rockers than tell me. ALL ADVICE IS WELCOMED

go to shows where bands you guys like. not only will there be a f’n ton of people there that like the same type of music you guys like, but there is bound to be some musicians there too!

i would start a youtube account so people would also capture some visual aspects of your performances which would make them want to check you guys out.
my friends’ bands use PureVolume, although i’m not sure if it’s free to put up songs. everything else like band sign up is, however.
you might also wanna try myspace, even if it is a little outdated.
you never know what could happen.

Is it legal to download music videos from a bands website and upload it to youtube? And still give credit to the author? Please help….

If the band allows it, it is legal,
if they don’t say so, it is not legal.

it is the bands music, they are the only ones that can upload it anywhere, including utube.

giving them "credit" means nothing,
they, or the writers, own all the copyrights to the music.

What to put on my band’s website?

Making a website for my band, and I have absolutely no idea what I’m supposed to put on it! I know I will include a biography and a contact page, and one for news updates and gigs, but what do I do with my homepage? And what else can I add?
Any and all answers are appreciated, though if you have some experience making your own band website, it would be all the more helpful.

A tour page (but i guess you’re probably not at this point of your career and you’ll probably just put your show date on the updates…), if you have a CD or more than one, you need a page for it…You can also put picture of the band, your shows, a little presentation of all of the band members (can be funny like, you can say some shit like where are you born and all, your inspiration, but also your favorite drink, your best halloween costume and some shit who people probably don’t care), maybe you can do a page who explain the signification of some of your songs with some lyrics.

Okay, My band has a few songs that we made, And we want to upload them to some website so we can get pretty much criticized and get told what to do that’d be better and at the same time get some fans/publicity. Can anyone help?

Getting criticism for your music is just like promoting yourself. You need to generate interest and hype for your band in order to get people to listen to your music and give you their opinion of it. With this in mind, you essentially need to run a publicity campaign for your band, same as you would if you were releasing an album or going on tour.

Starting a Facebook and/or Myspace page for you band is a good place to start. Gets friends and relatives to friend/like you so that your band (and therefore music) will start cycling through their friends and move down the proverbial chain. Dont forget to link your Facebook/Myspace page to everything you post everywhere else. Be sure to include new tracks on your page so people who like/friend you can listen to your music and comment.

Next, setting up a dedicated Youtube account to post videos of your tracks is one of the best ways to get your music out there. If you appropriately and effectively tag your videos and you generate hype efficiently, then your videos will be a good source of criticism and critique for your music. Be prepared for trolls, flamers, and irrelevant posts though, thats one of the inevitable drawbacks of Youtube.

If people like your music theyll likely want to dowload it and listen to it, and if they have your music on them then there is always the possibility that theyll share your music with a friend, which provides more exposure and possible sources of critique for your music. With this in mind using a site like Bandcamp or Soundcloud to upload your music and offer it for free download, you allow people to get your music and take it with them. If you choose to do this then dont forget to link your Bandcamp or Soundcloud page to both your Facebook/Myspace and any videos you put up on Youtube.

Finally, utilizing sites such as Purevolume and other, similar band specific sites as a way of getting other artists to critique your music is a great way to get constructive criticism. Other artists are the best source of criticism, since they know (generally) how to more effectively provide criticism and tips. If you choose to set up a Purevolume or other similar style site account, be sure to post links to your Bandcamp/Soundcloud and Facebook/Myspace.

Also, dont be afraid to ask for criticism on sites like Yahoo Answers or user run music review sites like Sputnikmusic. The more people listening to your music, the more potential sources for criticism, which is your ultimate goal. This strategy also begins building a fan base that you can then tap into should you ever decide to release and EP or LP or go on tour.

It isnt difficult to get yourself out there and garner some exposure, it just takes some time and dedication. As long as you keep at it, dont get discouraged, and remeber to always tie things together with links, youll start to generate buzz and get people viewing your work and providing criticism.
