JUNE 30, 2010 (Los Angeles, CA) — From the moment Cenk Uygur decided to broadcast the first progressive radio talk show — and Sirius Satellite Radio’s first original program — around the world, his desire to break boundaries was clear. 10 years and a quarter of a billion YouTube views later, his vision to turn “The Young Turks” talk show into a multi-media radio/podcast/live Internet “TV” show has proven worthwhile.

With 250,616,667 million total views and a June 2010 average of 600,000 views per day on YouTube alone, “The Young Turks” popularity highlights an audience hungry for a new approach to live news and discourse. Hosts Cenk Uygur and Ana Kasparian discuss politics, current events, sports and pop culture live weekdays from 6-9pm ET with guests ranging from Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi and President Jimmy Carter, to Rosario Dawson, Lou Dobbs, and Alan Greenspan.

The irreverent talk show can be seen live on “The Young Turks” website, with additional broadcasting on XM/Sirius Satellite Radio, podcast, and through the show’s YouTube and UStreampartner channels. In addition to “The Young Turks,” Uygur is a prominent blogger on The Huffington Post and Daily Kos.

Cenk Uygur — who will fill in for Dylan Ratigan next Tuesday and Wednesday as guest host of MSNBC’s “The Dylan Ratigan Show” — credits what he calls the “TYT Army” for the continued and expanding popularity in the show. “When you’re a network television show, you’re guaranteed millions of viewers,” explained Uygur. “Then you have to prove yourself after this gift. When you’re an online show, you’re guaranteed nothing. You start with zero viewers. We have now built up a quarter of a billion views for our online show, with no marketing budget and no existing infrastructure. That’s insane. That makes us by leaps and bounds more successful than any show that has ever been on television. Let them know, we’re coming.”

In 2009 the “TYT Army” launched a Facebook campaign to have Uygur considered for a position at MSNBC, drawing the attention of mainstream media outlets and ultimately, cable news’ top brass. The “TYT Army” has also drawn note from top websites and cable news producers who relay the increase in numbers received by the mere mention of “The Young Turks” or Uygur.

“The Young Turks” is a self-sustaining talk show, retaining its own content outside of major corporations. The program premiered on Sirius Satellite Radio in 2002 before transitioning to Air America Radio/XM Satellite Radio. In 2005 “The Young Turks” launched a first of its kind, daily live “TV” style format. In 2007, “The Young Turks” joined YouTube’s partnership program when it was introduced, and established an additional home in 2009 on UStream. It is no secret that 80’s pop is back in vogue today. You can find element of that genre in everything from hard rock to pop to even metal bands around the world. The enduring popularity of 80’s pop is a testament to the impact that this style of music had and continues to have. However, the genre may have a new face. Their name? Alphabeat.
Who is Alphabeat? An excellent question; they are a sextet pop group originally from Copenhagen, now located on the east side of London, England. They are much more than that, though. To listen to industry experts, they are the heir to the pop legacy that the 90’s never answered. Alphabeat stands poised to take the world by (a happy) storm.
Really, you ask? Yes, to all appearances, they will soon be crowned the kings (and one queen) of modern pop, with roots that reach back decades. What is the reason for all this hyperbole about a band? Believe it or not, some of the top music critics and most acclaimed music sources in Britain (NME, Popjustice and more) have all acclaimed them one of the most perfect pop bands in the world. That is big praise coming from those particular sources, as well.
Alphabeat combines an unusual mixture, though. Obviously, they use the platform of pop (wonky pop by their terminology), which appeals to kids and the young at heart. Beyond that, though, their lyrics have an undeniably adult bent. They discuss love and loss, pain and friendship, though all in an upbeat, almost frenetic setting. The band does an excellent job with their efforts and has garnered legions of fans, both in Denmark (their album went platinum almost immediately) and abroad. In the UK, they have made vast inroads into pop culture and gained quite a bit of airplay for their single Fantastic 6.
Where can you find Alphabeat? You can find them all over the place, actually. Their video on YouTube currently has 3 million hits (in the space of 3 months!), and their new website is up and running. The website features message forums where you can actually correspond with the band members. You can also watch videos, listen to the band’s music and buy swag. Beyond that, you can find them touring around the UK, including an appearance at this year’s Glastonbury festival and several other shows over the summer months.
