website designers / webmasters… exactly what computer & software do I need?

I am going to school for web design & only have a vague understanding of what I am doing so far. Exactly what computer will I need? Desktop / laptop? also exactly what software?

any computer will do… the software will vary depending on what the teachers methods are but you typically need
- notepad or simpletext (comes installed already)
- adobe photoshop
- adobe flash
- php
- my sql
- adobe dreamweaver… maybe… it’s not necessary but some people like to use it and find it easier

    Adobe Dreamweaver. Or BlueVoda

  2. Almost any computer will do. The software will depend on the class objectives. Ask the instructor.

  3. Any computer will do, as long as it runs an operating system capable of running the software you need (Windows XP or later will be fine, assuming you use Windows).

Strictly speaking the only thing you NEED to do webdesign is a text editor of some sort. Even notepad would work just fine. But there is software out there such as Dreamweaver that makes your job easier, I can’t recommend a specific program because I haven’t done much webdesign.

Photoshop or something would be nice so you can create your own images to put on the site, but not necessary.

That’s pretty much it. You don’t need that many special tools to make a website.

  4. Dreamweaver is your top app for beginners, it lets you create web sites almost as easily as using a word processor. Ignore 90% of the features, most people use 10% of it or less and it’s just fine.

Photoshop or GIMP or Fireworks for images are all good tools.

That’s pretty much it, or if you want to become a hardcore webmonkey like me, all you’d use is Notepad++ (Windows) or Coda (Mac) or Eclipse (Win/Mac/Linux) and Photoshop.

Ah yes and Firefox with Firebug installed – brilliant for debugging CSS issues. Chrome, Safari and Opera to test it across other browsers, and maybe IETester to make sure pages work in Microsoft’s crappy browsers.

Good luck, it’s one of the best hobbies to have in the world – I get paid to do this stuff all day!
