Quarter Of A Billion Views For TYT

“THE YOUNG TURKS” INTERNET SHOW HITS LANDMARK VIEWERSHIP NUMBERS
YouTube Channel Surpasses a Quarter of a Billion Upload Views

JUNE 30, 2010 (Los Angeles, CA) — From the moment Cenk Uygur decided to broadcast the first progressive radio talk show — and Sirius Satellite Radio’s first original program — around the world, his desire to break boundaries was clear. 10 years and a quarter of a billion YouTube views later, his vision to turn “The Young Turks” talk show into a multi-media radio/podcast/live Internet “TV” show has proven worthwhile.

With 250,616,667 million total views and a June 2010 average of 600,000 views per day on YouTube alone, “The Young Turks” popularity highlights an audience hungry for a new approach to live news and discourse. Hosts Cenk Uygur and Ana Kasparian discuss politics, current events, sports and pop culture live weekdays from 6-9pm ET with guests ranging from Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi and President Jimmy Carter, to Rosario Dawson, Lou Dobbs, and Alan Greenspan.

The irreverent talk show can be seen live on “The Young Turks” website, with additional broadcasting on XM/Sirius Satellite Radio, podcast, and through the show’s YouTube and UStreampartner channels. In addition to “The Young Turks,” Uygur is a prominent blogger on The Huffington Post and Daily Kos.

Cenk Uygur — who will fill in for Dylan Ratigan next Tuesday and Wednesday as guest host of MSNBC’s “The Dylan Ratigan Show” — credits what he calls the “TYT Army” for the continued and expanding popularity in the show. “When you’re a network television show, you’re guaranteed millions of viewers,” explained Uygur. “Then you have to prove yourself after this gift. When you’re an online show, you’re guaranteed nothing. You start with zero viewers. We have now built up a quarter of a billion views for our online show, with no marketing budget and no existing infrastructure. That’s insane. That makes us by leaps and bounds more successful than any show that has ever been on television. Let them know, we’re coming.”

In 2009 the “TYT Army” launched a Facebook campaign to have Uygur considered for a position at MSNBC, drawing the attention of mainstream media outlets and ultimately, cable news’ top brass. The “TYT Army” has also drawn note from top websites and cable news producers who relay the increase in numbers received by the mere mention of “The Young Turks” or Uygur.

“The Young Turks” is a self-sustaining talk show, retaining its own content outside of major corporations. The program premiered on Sirius Satellite Radio in 2002 before transitioning to Air America Radio/XM Satellite Radio. In 2005 “The Young Turks” launched a first of its kind, daily live “TV” style format. In 2007, “The Young Turks” joined YouTube’s partnership program when it was introduced, and established an additional home in 2009 on UStream. Guests on the program include the top power-makers in the field of politics and entertainment, including: Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi, Reverend Jesse Jackson, director Michael Moore, former Presidential candidate Ralph Nader, Senator John Kerry, actor Richard Dreyfuss, General Wesley Clark, NBC’s Brian Williams, conservative commentator Mary Matalin, former President Jimmy Carter, Senator Harry Reid, Spiderman creator Stan Lee, professor Noam Chomsky, actor Adam Sandler, NFL superstar Warrick Dunn, the late Senator Edward Kennedy, and more.

    @gocanuckzgo Cenk …
    @gocanuckzgo Cenk did say it was “a quarter of a billion views on our main youtube channel alone”. I think that is clear for what he was counting.

    BTW it is often hard to gauge how accurate the cable ratings are because they are calculated via surveys and diaries control groups make about what TV shows they watch and how often. That info is then used in contrast to the population at large. There is not any direct way to tell how many people watch a TV show on the regular networks.

  2. @lonelytrixter …
    @lonelytrixter Perhaps some more clarity in how the views are added up then. After all, a show like TYT, which prides itself on being honest and forthright, would do well to be transparent in how it calculates such figures.

  3. Congrats!! “I’m not …
    Congrats!! “I’m not sayin’ anything, I’m just sayin’” haha =]

  4. yeah, not really …
    yeah, not really unique visitors. still i’ll support them coz i like the show.

    @gocanuckzgo They …
    @gocanuckzgo They aren’t counting the views on the individual videos, they are more likely counting channel visits. That might be skewed a bit depending on how many people that see the channel actually watch the videos on it, but on average most people that choose to go to the channel probably watch at least a few videos. Regardless getting that much exposure is pretty amazing in itself. Comparatively think how many people that view cable shows actually watch the entire thing vs just a few min.

    @TheSleepaholic I …
    @TheSleepaholic I guess you don’t know what “skip” means….because not only didn’t you skip any sentence, you replied. But a dumb-ass like you wouldn’t recognize that.
    If you already knew that Youtube counts unique IPs why would you say “Basically what you would need is the number of unique IP’s that watch at least one of the videos, per day. ”
    You argue dishonestly and continually contradict yourself.

    I’m done.

    @BenjaminFranklin2u …
    @BenjaminFranklin2u I skip the first 2 sentences, since they are invalid and probably result from generalizing unrelated prior YT experience.

    “YT does not count hits from the same ip”. Not sure if you intended this distinction but we talk views not hits. And of course it does. YT counts both (uniq/multi) but Cenk doesn’t use the uniq count, but the one that is shown under the videos/in the channel. And nobody is able to filter out bots.

    Now go away and don’t do what you accuse others of doing.

  10. ah, i love you guys …
    ah, i love you guys. keep up the good work!

  11. I have watched 250 …
    I have watched 250 videos easily. If you take the average TYT watcher to have watched just 25 videos in total, you’re not looking at that many unique viewers. Furthermore because each show is split up into segments, a one hour show would get as much as 10 views from one person, that taken into account TYT doesn’t get as much views as it makes out to.

    That being said it’s a great show. Keep it up.

    Congratulations.
    Going from 0 to 250 000 000 views is no small feat.
    Keep it strong and keep it true.

    @TheSleepaholic …
    @TheSleepaholic You’re just like FOX, talking out of your ass, all the while being ignorant to the facts.
    If you’re gonna spew a paragraph about something, at least say something. With that in mind:
    Youtube does not count hits from the same ip, and they meticulously weed out bots. As for a partial view, I’m not sure what youtube does about this, but I’d count it, I don’t see why not. The person did click on the video and at least view part of it, that’s a view in my book.

    It helps when …
    It helps when Youtube hawks your videos for you and features 6-8 of them everyday. Because they agree with your political views. Most people just look at the featured stuff.

    @YawnGod
    Yea but …

    @YawnGod
    Yea but thats not a reason to hate it – wtf? Theyre proud of reaching 250 mil regardless of how. They gain almost 5000 subscribers a week the point is TYT is gaining in popularity. As to whether or not views are legitimate – as long as they didn’t pay a company to view their videos its legitimate. So now you’re gonna go to every Youtuber and tell him this too? Man get a grip how insignificant pure semantics.

  21. oliviajune91 on July 6th, 2010 at 4:43 am

    @YawnGod That’s …
    @YawnGod That’s still a pretty decent 500 000+ true views, even if approximately 1000 of those are random. And the views only count if someone watches the entire video until the end, so comments wouldn’t add more views.

    yeah i cant stand u …
    yeah i cant stand u but i watch u…u know why? because youtube promotes u on their front page, even when other political speakers get more views than u. why? because youtube is a biased left wing sight
